COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Bye Bye to“Mr Birdie”

The curtain has come down on another SMC musical and once again it was a somber
moment for all involved. Bye Bye Birdie was performed for the last time on
Saturday 17th June at Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention centre where over 4
nights 2000 people witnessed the bright and colorful show. The cast and crew of
140 students said a sad goodbye to each other after 6 months of hard work and
dedication.

The show was a huge success and the buzz continues to resonate around the
college. Bye Bye Birdie took productions to new heights at the college, with
wonderful costumes, larger than life sets, powerful music and an enthusiastic
cast. Stories appeared in the Whittlesea Post, S- Press, Star and Herald Sun
newspapers. Members of our local community, who have no direct ties with SMC,
purchased tickets to see the show. Who would have known that a 50 year old story
about a washed up rock and roll star would have captured the hearts of so many
people?

The greatest pleasure we get from producing these shows are the smiles on the
students faces each night after the final scene is performed. The cast and crew
took real ownership of the production and made it their own. Student leadership
was a real focus with students taking on roles such as Stage Manager, Chorus
Captains, Lighting Technicians and make up artists. St. Monica’s has now built a
strong musical culture and it will continue to grow for many years to come.

As always a show like this could not have been possible without the help and
assistance of so many. To anyone that assisted in anyway we thank you. Musicals
are a huge undertaking and we were grateful that once again so many came forward
to lend a hand. Finally to our wonderful students that made up the cast, crew
and band. It is always a pleasure to work with you. You did yourselves, your
family and the college proud. We look forward to working with you again in
future years.
