‚ÄčEligibility for completing the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning

There are two full VCAL certificates offered at St Monica's College. Intermediate and Senior. Generally, Year 11 students are enrolled in Intermediate VCAL and Year 12 students are enrolled in Senior VCAL.

At Year 10 students are able to enrol in Pre-VCAL which is a 'modified program'. This includes the following VCAL Units: Numeracy, Literacy, Work Related and Personal Development Skills plus a Certificate I in Employment Pathway.

To be eligible for the award of the Intermediate and Senior VCAL certificates, the student must satisfactorily complete studies in each of the five VCAL strands:

  • Literacy Skills
  • Numeracy Skills
  • Work Related Skills
  • Personal Development Skills
  • Industry Specific Skills (fulfilled through a minimum of one VET Certificate and additional VET and/or VCE Units)

Like the VCE, there are attendance requirements in VCAL. It is possible for students to fail the certificate due to poor attendance. It is also compulsory for all students to attend activities such as excursions and camps.

All course requirements must be completed in order to receive a VCAL certificate. If requirements are not met, a statement of results for completed strands will be issued by the VCAA.
