COLLEGE ICONS - ICON OF ST MONICA
An icon of our patron saint, Monica, was commissioned from
Western Australian artist, Marice Sariola, in 2006.
Finnish born Sariola worked ten years in the Church of Sweden
before her migration to Australia in 1989. The icon was purchased with funds
donated to the College on the occasion of our fortieth anniversary in 2004. This
icon features a youthful Monica reflecting on what her later life would require
– much prayer and perseverance to convert her son, Augustine, to Christianity.
Monica nurses a book with the words of the College’s motto
‘Pray and Persevere’ featuring on the open page, and in the background the
artist portrays the sea voyage Monica would embark upon as she traveled to Milan
to be with the wayward Augustine. The sea in the background also reminds us of
the Roman port of Ostia where Monica was later to die in 387 AD.
