COLLEGE ICONS - MONICA ADMIRABILIS
Monica Admirabilis is the sculpture which is featured on the
Administration and Classroom Building on Dalton Road Campus. It was commissioned
in 1997 and was mounted the following year. It was created by sculptors from
Orchard Design.
Monica Admirabilis (Latin for Monica Most Admirable) depicts
our College’s patroness, St Monica as she looks ahead with confidence and
determination.
The sculpture has the visage of a young African woman thus
representing St Monica’s nationality and her birthplace of modern day Algeria.
The flowing ribbons represent a movement forward as Monicans
pray and persevere to achieve through all their thoughts and actions. The cross
is sign of the College’s Christian foundations, its polished silver emphasising
the centrality of our faith in all we do.
The College motto ‘Pray and Persevere’ is engraved clearly
and proudly and links into the flowing, moving ribbons of steel. The shield of
courage makes a fine, dramatic background for the sculpture.
Monica Admirabilis inspires all of who gaze upon it to be
people of hope, strength and beauty.
