COLLEGE THEME
St Monica's College Theme 2008
The 2008 College Theme is Peace and Harmony.
This theme has been chosen in a time when peace is needed so much throughout the
contemporary world; between people as they interact with each other; and in the
daily lives of individuals. Peace and Harmony will make St Monica's College,
Epping a better and happier school in 2008.
At times during the year we shall discern the meaning of true
peace because peace has many forms. We shall learn how to achieve it and we
shall discover the great and positive effect harmony has on a community and in
one’s own life.
The theme will focus on the need for peace in the world – in
war torn countries and between peoples of different cultures and traditions. We
shall reflect on the words and actions of true peacemakers such as Martin Luther
King in America, Nelson Mandela in Africa and other famous leaders and prophets
including Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi, each of whom taught a philosophy in
which peace and harmony are at the heart.
We shall also aim to be a College of Peace and Harmony. Peace
must exist at SMC first and then peace in its wider context will flow forth. We
shall find ways to work as Monicans who prioritize peace and reject violence; we
shall seek peace and act harmoniously in all environments of the College; we
shall be advocates of peace and practitioners of harmony on a daily basis.
It will be important to teach peace and harmony so that
individuals who are experiencing contradictions and conflict and imbalance in
their lives can discover the ways and means by which peace and harmony can be
nurtured in one’s heart and soul. May peace flow within so that harmony is
achieved in all aspects of one’s life.
Peace is the message of Jesus Christ. He left us His peace
and Christ invites us to spread that peace to others too. Jesus Christ is our
model of harmony – a genuine, gentle, compassionate model of perfect humanity.
In 2008 we shall meet and encounter other followers of Jesus who are living His
message in Australia today.
Our College community will be challenged constantly to be
people of peace and harmony. Why? Because Jesus told us, "Blessed are the
Peacemakers for they are the Children of God." (Matthew 5:9)
