Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications are skills-based qualifications, which consist of specialist units of competency. These units of competency are developed for industry, in consult with government educational bodies and industry professionals. VET qualifications are relevant to the skills needed for particular professions. The practical nature of VET qualifications allows students to develop valuable skills and knowledge for the workplace.

VET qualifications are compulsory in a vocational pathway (VCE VM), and they specifically develop a student’s employability skills. VET qualifications can be scored or unscored and can be studied alongside the VCE.

St Monica’s College supports a diverse range of pathways in school via our own specialist facilities.  The College can also facilitate other specialist interest VET qualifications including (but not limited to) VET Certificate III Beauty Services, VET Certificate II Plumbing and VET Certificate II Animal Care. VCE – VM (Vocational Major)

  • The VCE VM (Vocational Major) is a vocational and applied learning program within the VCE, designed to be completed over two years. The VCE VM provides a vocational pathway for students to develop their career interests and develop the skills and capabilities needed to succeed in further education, work and life.
  • Students who undertake, and successfully complete the VCE VM are able to move into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, university (via non-ATAR pathways) or directly into the workforce.
  • The VCE VM has a specialist curriculum, and unit’s requirement, which has been developed by the VCAA in line with the VCE. Students enrolled in the VCE VM will complete VCE VM Literacy, VCE VM Numeracy, VCE VM Personal Development Skills and VCE VM Work Related Skills.
  • VCE VM students will be required to choose two VET qualifications and they will complete one day per week (or the equivalent) in the workplace as part of their Structured Workplace Learning (SWL). The SWL is an integral part of the VCE VM program at St Monica’s College and it offers students the opportunity to integrate on-the-job experience with secondary study.
