COUNSELLING (YEARS 7-9)

“Adolescents face career decisions about subject choice and transition from school and begin to consider their future options.”

– National Careers Institute (2022)

STUDENT

LEADERSHIP

Our student leadership council develop valuable leadership skills in public speaking, meeting procedures, time management, communication, decision making, event planning, evaluation, budgeting and team building.

Pathways Counselling Service

The Pathways Counselling service is available to students in Years 7–9 across both the Dalton Road Campus (DRC) and the St Stephen’s Gaudette Campus (SGC).

The program supports students to explore their career pathway by developing an understanding of their interests, strengths, and future possibilities.

During their secondary school years, young people often feel pressure to make decisions about their future without having the self-awareness or knowledge to do so confidently. Career exploration is a gradual process that requires time and reflection, yet it often begins too late (Education Services Australia, 2025).

At St Monica’s College, we prioritise early access to career education.

The Pathways Counselling services helps students build their knowledge and confidence to make informed and considered decisions about their future pathways.

Students can book individual appointments for support with:

• Subject selection

• Exploring post-school pathways

• Researching university and TAFE options

• Resume writing

• Career goal setting

Parents hold the key.

“Only 20% of parents feel they currently have sufficient knowledge of employment and training options to help their child make decisions about life after school.” – (Acknowledgement: Brotherhood of St Laurence)

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting career development. You can assist your child by:

  • Focus on skills and behaviour your child will need, rather than specific jobs.
  • Talk about goals and what your child finds fulfilling.
  • Be open-minded and encouraging.
  • Talk about what your child has put in their career action plan from school.
  • Be patient as your child’s choices may change.
  • Remember it’s your child’s decision on what direction they want to go.

Some children will have a clear goal when they’re young, while others will take a long time to explore and decide (State government of Victoria, 2024).
